Sunday night tradition

 

Passing along the Apple Crisp tradition...almost every Sunday night growing up we would have crisp for dinner. If mom was feeling extra health-consious we would have soup first, but quite often it was just this sweet beauty along with the Wonderful World of Disney at 6 pm. Still smells of comfort to my soul. How does comfort smell to you???

Snowflakes

A math study of symmetry and shapes mixed with a little 

scientific classification of snowflakes on a snowy day...

 

then we used our watercolours to make a winter wash and experimented 

with salt crystals to make a snowy scene...

 

One more thing...we made snow ice cream like this!

Earthquakes

The news about Haiti has sparked a lot of questions for the kids. It seemed fitting to do some exploration about what causes earthquakes and why it was so devastating.  

Using Jello and lego blocks, we experimented with different types of building structures. The Jello covered in plastic wrap represented the layers of the earths crust and allowed the kids to see the vibrations affects on their creations. We also used graham crackers rubbed together to see what happens when two fault lines collide... 

Of course this made a good snack at the end too!

Animals in Winter

 

We've been learning about what some of the local critters do to survive the cool West Kelowna winters. After a nature walk through our little forest, we decided to make a treat for our feathered friends using pinecones we found, peanut butter (organic of course!) and wild bird seed mix. Taste-tested and approved by Madalene.

 

We enjoyed watching this...

Christmas '09 Memories

This is all we captured...our camera died. But we still had fun!

 

The kids made their stockings this year with fabric pastels and a robot theme. They each took turns on my lap sewing them too!
